The Diversion Channel will carry flood waters safely around the Metro Area during times of extreme flooding. Flood waters coming from the Red River and its tributaries will be directed into the Diversion Channel and safely through town via three control structures along the Southern Embankment.
Miles of flood walls, levees, and numerous pump stations allow floodwaters to pass safely through the cities of Fargo and Moorhead. After a long history of spring floods, a broad coalition formed after the flood to study how to better protect the residents, farms, businesses, emergency services and all those who depend on them.
The flood of record in focused those efforts on the development of the FM Area Diversion. Red River flooding not only impacts lives, land, property, agriculture and other essential services, but puts the entire regional economy at risk.
